A 1GW data center plan from Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison puts the spotlight on ASEAN's digital infrastructure needs. Capital is flowing, but can the region execute?

A recent announcement from Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, in partnership with Nvidia and others, has outlined a plan to develop a 1-gigawatt data center ecosystem in the Greater Jakarta area. As reported by Data Center Dynamics, this move is designed to support a wider push into artificial intelligence services across the region. The scale of the project, which will be executed in partnership with the parent company Ooredoo, highlights the immense capital flowing into ASEAN's digital backbone.
While a gigawatt-scale project grabs headlines, its success hinges on more than just investment. The physical and regulatory infrastructure required to support such a development is substantial. Large data centers are not merely buildings full of servers; they are massive consumers of power and water, and they require high-capacity fiber optic connections to function. The project's success will depend on Indonesia's ability to deliver reliable power, streamline permitting, and ensure that other utilities are available at the required scale. These locations are now competing to prove they can replicate Singapore's model of seamless execution. This includes electrical and mechanical engineers, network specialists, and cybersecurity experts.
